High Standard Makeup Products: What To Avoid

Makeup products have been used for centuries as way to express yourself and enhance physical appearance. The cosmetics industry has experienced incredible growth; thousands of makeup products circulate the market and new ones are produced every day. Thanks to people’s awareness about what they put in and on their bodies, many are questioning what’s really inside those products.

‘Clean beauty’, ‘natural’ and ‘non-toxic’ seem like the words of the century. We hear and see them everywhere ever since the green movement started. People seem to have more faith in products that use these claims, because everyone wants to live a healthier life.

Knowing this fact, cosmetic brands use these terms to be more attractive to the general audience and this consequently enhances their profits. The thing is that, they are allowed do this since these terms are not regulated; they can put ‘nontoxic’ on the label of their products and if you read the ingredient list on the back, you may find a lot of questionable ingredients.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has an ambiguous explanation of what a natural product can be, therefore it can be easily used as a marketing term. On top of that, the U.S. has only around 30 banned ingredients, compared to Europe that has over 1300 banned ingredients.

Some very questionable makeup ingredients that some brands still use are parabens, sulfates, talc.

Parabens are very harmful and yet, they are used in around 75% or cosmetic products. The European Commission on Endocrine Disruption has listed parabens as Category 1 priority substances, based on evidence that they interfere with hormone function. They can penetrate the skin and mimic estrogen. Some studies show that paraben has been found in breast cancer tissue and can alter reproductive functions in both men and women. EU has restriction on the concentration of Paraben in makeup products. This ingredient may be listed with different names and it can deceive people, but we want to assure you that RealHer products are completely paraben-free.

RealHer’s products are also sulfate-free. Sulfates are mainly known for their potential of irritation to the skin. But, depending on many factors, sulfates can be contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. The International Agency for Research on Cancer ethylene oxide as a known human carcinogen and 1,4 dioxane as a possible human carcinogen. That may affect nervous system and interfere with human development.

Talc is an ingredient used in so many different cosmetic items, especially powders. With talc there are two problems: the risk of inhalation of the particles and secondly the risk of it being contaminated with asbestos. To avoid any of these problems, RealHer doesn’t use it in the making of the eye shadow palettes.
